Why are sports “heroes” and celebrities used to advertise products? What can you do about it and why should you?

Sports heroes & celebrities are used to advertise products so their fans will want to buy the product/service they are trying to sell. You can realize that having a product/service doesn’t make you “cool”. It just makes you poorer & the advertiser(s) richer. You need to realize this so you don’t buy stuff just because a famous person you like is selling it.

People look up to these people as ideols and end up listening to them like they are an expert at everything even though they have no reason to be endorsing a product that they are not related too. Payton Manning is not an expert on pizza so he should not be selling it. You should just not listen to the advertisement you see. The world is trying to push products on to you that you do not need or really want. You should try and separate your self from all the useless stuff and try to give back to your community and others.

Many sports people and celebrities are highly thought of by the general public. Businesses sometimes use this positive image in their advertising so that the general public associates their company/brand/product with that athlete or celebrity. In this way, people, without always realizing it, see their favorite famous person with a product and, because they like the person or want to be like them, they want that particular product as well.
I don’t think that this type of marketing will be slowing down any time soon because it is such a successful method for many companies. We as consumers will need to pay attention to the ads around us and realize what the company is doing so we can decide if we really need a certain product or if our ‘need’ has been influenced by advertisements. We should try to separate the product from the marketing so that we can make a better decision as to what will be best for us as individuals.

    Well said everyone. Let’s review.

    (1) Our society places a great deal of importance on sports and entertainment. This causes us to place halo’s over the most “successful” in those industries. Marketing plans use that to sell you products using those “amazing” people.

    (2) Stop putting those people on pedestals. They are not anymore special than you and I. Keep reminding yourself of that fact.

    (3) By stopping the effect, you will end up spending less, and saving more. Combine that with great investing (an assortment of no-load index mutual funds) and financial freedom is sure to follow. Believe in that and believe in YOU.
