Where can you go to learn about doing your taxes for free (including free e-file)? What are the income requirements?

One the IRS website they talk about 2 programs that they have. The IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) Programs offer free tax help for taxpayers who qualify. The VITA Program generally offers free tax help to people who make $52,000 or less and need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals in local communities. They can inform taxpayers about special tax credits for which they may qualify such as Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, and Credit for the Elderly or the Disabled. VITA sites are generally located at community and neighborhood centers, libraries, schools, shopping malls, and other convenient locations. The TCE Program offers free tax help for all with priority assistance to people who are 60 years of age and older, specializing in questions about pensions and retirement issues unique to seniors. IRS-certified volunteers who provide tax counseling are often retired individuals associated with non-profit organizations that receive grants from the IRS.

Garrett covered all the info above but for any locals reading this there is a VITA site on the UNI campus (Curris 223) from 6:30-9:00pm on Mondays and Wednesdays through April 9. It is run by Accounting professors and upper class Accounting students. A great service to our campus and community.

You covered plenty of good information Garrett and Karen. Let me add some more.

Go here: and hit on the free file tab to see if you qualify to do your taxes for free, including e-filing your federal and state returns. I generally recommend the turbotax program, but I am sure many of them will serve you well. Take control!
