What is a Target Date Retirement Fund and how does it work? How do you decide which one to select?

A Target Date Retirement Fund is designed to provide you with a single fund that diversifies all of your investments in one place. These are generally available to you in your 401(k) and TSP plans, as well as separately outside your retirement plans. Target Date Retirement Funds have numbers attached to them. The longer the time horizon, the more aggressive the fund’s investments will be (more stocks and less bonds and cash). If you are planning on retiring near or on the year 2050, a target retirement 2050 fund is suitable for you.
